Stop Treating Chihuahuas Like Toys – They Deserve Better

A Chihuahua in the right home, with the right care, can be the perfect companion. They were bred for it, after all.

Chihuahuas are smart, straightforward little dogs. They know what they want, and they aren’t afraid to tell us. But because of their size—and the way humans treat them—they’re having a hard time.

Chihuahuas Are Not Accessories

Look at the Chihuahua pages and posts on social media. More and more, these little dogs are being treated like toys, fashion accessories, or props for entertainment. Yesterday, I saw a Chihuahua with false eyelashes glued onto their tiny face. That’s not cute. It’s not funny. It’s just sad.

Then there are the videos—the ones where people deliberately push their dogs into a fearful, defensive, or aggressive response, all for a few seconds of online attention. People laugh at these tiny dogs baring their teeth or snapping in fear, as if it’s some kind of joke. It’s not a joke. It’s stress, anxiety, and overwhelm. And it’s completely unfair.

A Dog, No Matter How Small, Is Still a Dog

The biggest issue with Chihuahuas isn’t their size. It’s how people treat them because of it.

A Chihuahua’s emotions, instincts, and needs are just as real as those of a Labrador or a German Shepherd.

But because they’re small, people think they don’t need training. That they don’t need space. That they don’t need respect.

People pick them up without asking. They carry them around in bags. They dress them up like dolls. They force them into situations that make them feel unsafe, then get frustrated when the dog reacts.

Chihuahuas aren’t aggressive by nature. They’re defensive—because they have to be. If you were the size of a rabbit in a world of giants who manhandle you without warning, you’d probably be on edge, too.

What Chihuahuas Really Need From Us

So, if you share your life with a Chihuahua—or any tiny dog—please take a moment to think about what they actually need from you.

They need to feel safe. They are small, but that doesn’t mean they should be treated as helpless. Instead of carrying them everywhere, let them use their own four paws whenever possible. Give them the choice to move away from things that scare them.

They need respect. Just because they’re tiny doesn’t mean they want to be touched, picked up, or handled whenever you feel like it. If your Chihuahua ducks away when you reach for them, that’s a clear sign they’re uncomfortable. Listen to them.

They need enrichment. These little dogs are intelligent. They love to sniff, explore, and learn new things. If they spend their whole lives being carried around or kept indoors, they’ll become frustrated, bored, and anxious.

They need to be treated like dogs. Not accessories. Not social media props. Not fashion statements. Dogs.

Your Chihuahua Is Counting on You

It’s easy to forget how vulnerable these little dogs are. But they don’t have a choice in how they’re treated.

We decide that for them.

They don’t need to be dressed up for laughs. They don’t need to be forced into stressful situations for entertainment. They don’t need to be picked up, squeezed, or carried around just because they’re small enough to be.

They need you—their guardian, their protector, their advocate—to see the world from their perspective.

To help them feel safe. To respect them as the amazing, intelligent, sensitive little dogs they are.

So please—don’t let them down.
